This is usually framed as a choice. It is not really — one is a machine, the other is the condition that lets the machine work.
Is a dehumidifier an alternative to encapsulation?
Not in a vented crawl space. A dehumidifier in a space with open vents is dehumidifying the outdoors: it will run continuously through the summer, cost real money and lose. The dehumidifier becomes effective once the space has been sealed, which is what encapsulation does.
Why does a dehumidifier fail in a vented crawl space?
Because it is competing with an unlimited supply. Every hour, more humid outside air comes through the vents to replace what the machine has just dried. Through a Piedmont summer that air carries more moisture than the crawl space can hold at its own temperature.
The unit is not undersized in that scenario — it is fighting a source that does not run out. Sealing the vents is what turns the job into a finite one.
Is encapsulation without a dehumidifier any better?
No, and this is the other half of the same mistake. Sealing removes the incoming moisture but also removes the air exchange that used to carry some moisture away. Whatever remains — from the ground, from the framing, from the air already in there — now has nowhere to go.
North Carolina treats mechanical drying as part of the specification rather than as an optional extra. An encapsulation quote with no means of drying has described a closed box in a humid climate.
So which comes first?
They are two steps of one job, in a fixed order: resolve any liquid water, seal the space, then dry it. Doing the third without the second is the expensive version. Doing the second without the third is the version that fails in a season or two.

What size unit does a sealed crawl space need?
Sizing follows the sealed volume and the humid-season load rather than square footage alone. The month that matters here is August, when outdoor humidity peaks near 76 percent — a unit chosen against the annual average will cope in spring and fall behind exactly when the space is worst.

Can I do the dehumidifier now and encapsulate later?
You can, but understand what you are buying. In a vented space the unit will run hard and deliver limited improvement, and you will have paid for equipment sized against the wrong conditions.
If budget is the constraint, sealing the vents and covering the ground first generally does more per dollar than adding a machine to an unsealed space.
